Stroke is a neurological condition characterized by brain injury resulting from impaired cerebral blood flow and inadequate oxygen supply to brain tissue. Stroke may lead to paralysis, cognitive impairment, and disability, which can affect patients’ ability to perform self-care activities. One factor that may influence self-care ability is self-efficacy. This study aimed to determine the relationship between self-efficacy and self-care ability among stroke patients in the Nagasari Ward of Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital, Bali, Indonesia.
This study employed a correlational analytic design with a cross-sectional approach. The study was conducted from mei - june 2026 in the Nagasari Ward of Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital. A total of 53 stroke patients who met the inclusion criteria were recruited using consecutive sampling. Data were collected by Data were collected by the researchers through direct observation and interviews with the patients. Using standardized instruments. Self-efficacy was measured using the Stroke Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (SSEQ), while self-care ability was assessed using the Barthel Index. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Spearman’s rank correlation test, with a significance level of p < 0.05.
The results showed that the majority of respondents had low self-efficacy, comprising 25 patients (47.2%), while 38 patients (71.7%) had severe dependence in self-care ability. Spearman’s rank correlation analysis showed a p-value of 0.001 (p < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.469, indicating a statistically significant, moderate positive relationship between self-efficacy and self-care ability among stroke patients. Higher levels of self-efficacy were associated with better self-care ability. Therefore, interventions aimed at enhancing self-efficacy may support improvements in the self-care ability of stroke patients.
