Abstract

Hypertension is a major non-communicable disease and an important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, and chronic kidney disease. This study aimed to determine the effect of LI-4 (Hegu) acupressure therapy on blood pressure among patients with hypertension at Merdeka Public Health Center, Palembang, in 2026. A quantitative quasi-experimental study with a pre-test post-test control group design was conducted among 60 respondents selected by purposive sampling, comprising 30 respondents in the intervention group and 30 in the control group. The intervention group received LI-4 acupressure for 10–15 minutes per session, twice daily for 7 consecutive days, while the control group received no acupressure intervention and underwent the same pre-test and post-test measurements. Blood pressure was measured using a digital sphygmomanometer. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and Mann–Whitney U Test because the data were not normally distributed. The mean systolic/diastolic blood pressure in the intervention group decreased from 153.77/92.53 mmHg to 137.50/87.33 mmHg. In the control group, the mean decreased from 152.50/94.80 mmHg to 150.57/91.47 mmHg. Wilcoxon testing showed significant pre-post differences in the intervention group for systolic (p=0.000) and diastolic (p=0.008) blood pressure, while the control group also showed significant changes for systolic and diastolic blood pressure (both p=0.000). Mann–Whitney testing showed a significant difference in systolic blood pressure change between groups (p=0.000), but not in diastolic blood pressure change (p=0.185). These findings indicate that LI-4 acupressure was associated with a greater reduction in systolic blood pressure than the control condition, whereas the between-group difference in diastolic blood pressure was not statistically significant.
