Needlestick injury (NSI) is a major occupational hazard among health workers, including laboratory personnel, because it can transmit bloodborne infections such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), hepatitis B, and hepatitis C. This literature review aimed to analyze the relationship between workload and the incidence of NSI among laboratory personnel based on published research findings. A narrative literature review was conducted using scientific articles identified through Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect. The reviewed studies addressed workload, occupational safety, NSI, and health workers, particularly laboratory personnel. Most studies indicated that high workload was associated with an increased risk of NSI. Excessive workload may contribute to physical and mental fatigue, work stress, reduced concentration, and procedural errors when handling needles and other sharp instruments. Other contributing factors included long working hours, high sample volume, inadequate rest periods, insufficient occupational safety training, and shift work. Appropriate workload management, safe work procedures, regular occupational safety training, and consistent supervision are needed to reduce the risk of NSI in laboratory settings
